Speaker Al-Ghanim: Egypt's parliamentary elections "important" democratic step
Arab Parliamentary Union President and Speaker of the National Assembly, Marzouq Al-Ghanim, said Sunday he was happy to learn Egypt's High Election Committee (HEC) has called for general elections in October.
"Holding the much anticipated parliamentary elections is an important step in the process of democratic transformation in Egypt, in the wake of the endorsement of constitution and presidential elections," Al-Ghanim said in a statement.
Al-Ghanim called on the Egyptians to actively participate in the upcoming elections.
He said the Arab people were looking foward for the legitlative elections in the largest Arab country.
HEC announced earlier that elections for the lower house of parliament would be held on October 18-19.
