kanye west accused of copying fashion designs

Despite launching several collections and a collaboration with fashion brand A.P.C, it’s no secret that Kanye West has next to no design experience.

The singer, who recently admitted he’s a “fashion victim”, has now been accused of copying a number of designs, with a source telling Radar Online, “This issue was the parting point between him and one of his collaborators not too long ago.”

Concern was reportedly raised last month after he debuted his A.P.C x Kanye collection, which insiders noted had a distinct similarity to designs by Rick Owen.

Whether or not West is aware of the accusations remains unknown, but just last month he asked for “patience” from the fashion industry.
“To flip it from being a fashion victim to maybe a fashion icon to a person who can give an opinion, and that’s what I’m in the process of doing,” West said. So I just want everyone to be patient with me."

Unfortunately, it seems patience is running out, with the source explaining, “People around him have been saying it for a while, and it’s happening right now with all these copying accusations. People will see pretty soon that he’s all talk with little substance to back it up.”
West attended fashion school for just one semester, admitting that he was "too famous" to educate himself on the topic, but “rich enough” to play around with design and make some mistakes.

“He was totally clueless about design up until recently,” continued the source. “He had no idea about what books to read, or what designers were good, and he had to have people tell him, to take him to Art Basel, fashion week and so on.

“Maybe some people can do big things in design with no education, but Kanye is really going too far and taking on projects that are too big even for someone who is well-educated and has experience in the field.”

The singer has received mix reviews since his foray into the design world in 2011.

"Next season Kanye should get a tailor so clothes might fit," the New York Times tweeted after his first show. "Models swimming in some looks. Kills the hot look, no?"

Meanwhile the International Herald Tribune said plainly that West should stick entertaining the masses with his music instead.

"The Kanye West show, in my humble opinion, is proof that everyone can love fashion but not everyone can be a fashion designer," said style editor Jessica Michault.
