President election session postponed again
The Daily Star
The 39th session to elect a new head of state Tuesday met a fate similar its predecessors, with Speaker Nabih Berri postponing it to June 2.
Around forty-one lawmakers, mainly from the March 14 coalition, arrived at the Parliament in Beirut’s Nejmeh Square to attend the session, well below the minimum number of ministers needed to elect a president.
Thirty-eight sessions have so far failed to secure the needed quorum to elect a new head of state in a protracted crisis since the tenure of President Michel Sleiman ended in May 2014.
Almost two years into the crisis, the power vacuum has largely paralyzed the Parliament and threatened the work of the Cabinet.
Hezbollah and its allies, the Change and Reform bloc lead by MP Michel Aoun, have been boycotting the sessions.
Marada Movement leader Sleiman Frangieh, who was tipped by his rival Future Movement leader Saad Hariri to run for the office, also abstained from attending session to conform with the stance of its March 8 allies.
The presidential race is pitting Frangieh against Aoun, who is backed by Hezbollah, some of its March 8 allies and the Lebanese Forces. Frangieh’s presidential bid is also backed by Berri, MP Walid Jumblatt, and some independent lawmakers.
