Tunisian parliamentary elections: Nidaa Tounes secular party leads parliamentary votes

By Zeyad Ibrahim

Tunisian leading secular party, Nidaa Tounes, has been reported to have won 80 % of the Tunisian parliament seats in the elections which kicked off on Sunday.

Nidaa Tounes's electoral rival Islamist party, Ennahda, won 67 seats, which is a setback for the Islamist party which led the political life since the fall of the regime of long-time dictator, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.

President of the Independent High Authority for the Elections (ISIE) Chafik Sarsar announced on Sunday night that the turnout in the legislative elections in all constituencies in Tunisia reached 61.9% at the closing of polling stations, according to the Tunisian News Agency (TAP) reported.

As for the turnout in the six electoral constituencies abroad, it is close to 29%, a rate that is not final since voting continues in some countries because of the different time zones, according to ISIE member Faouzia Drissi.
