Tunisians set to vote for parliament in October

Tunisia will hold parliamentary elections on October 26, according to Reuters Wednesday.

The Tunisian parliament voted this week to hold the parliamentary elections in late October, followed by the presidential poll a month later as part of its democratic transition roadmap.

The first round of the presidential election is set for Nov. 23, and a second round will be held at the end of December if no candidate receives at least 50 percent of the vote in November.

Tunisia currently functions under an interim government after the former Ennahda leadership resigned from power earlier this year in response to growing criticism from the public of its rule after two political opposition figures were assassinated within one year.

The upcoming polls represent the first of their kind since the country adopted a new constitution earlier this year.

More than 1,000 international observers have been invited to Tunisia to ensure a fair and free election.

The Ennahda party, as well as the main opposition party, Nida Tounes, are expected to  be the strongest contenders in the upcoming vote.
